These 2 Changes Tripled My Views in 60 Days (and anyone can do it)
At the end of December, I was discouraged by my results from writing online.
My views grew for three straight months, and then they crashed in December, even though I was writing every day. I thought about doing something different in January — maybe I needed a new online writing platform.
Over Christmas, I got a wake-up call from Nicolas Cole’s book The Art and Business of Online Writing. He opened my eyes to what I needed to change.
Here’s what I changed that more than tripled my views in 60 days.
I Started Using Data to Double-Down on what Worked
I had written a few articles about sports before, and I noticed they got more external views than my other articles.
I decided to write more articles about sports and see what would happen. I’m glad I did — because the data doesn’t lie. I’ve had three sports articles cross 2k views. One is nearing 6k total views.
By following the data, I followed the evidence for what would work.
I Stopped Putting Every Article Behind a Paywall
Because I was wanted as many people as possible to view my sports articles, I stopped putting my sports articles behind Medium’s paywall.
None of my top three sports articles are behind Medium’s paywall. I discovered articles tend to receive a lot of external traffic when they aren’t behind a paywall. Not as much money — but a lot more views.
Would you prefer a few extra dollars or double — even triple — the views?
These two changes are simple. Any online writer can do this. You can make these changes.
If you are frustrated by low views — give these two changes a try and see what happens.
